When a small child falls down, they need comfort from Mommy or Daddy. A smile or an affirming word of assurance lets them know it will be alright.  That’s what God does for me. He lets me know that I am his little girl and that He is right there to hold me.

How does He hold me?

It’s often with His Word through Scripture. Sometimes a song speaks directly to my situation or struggle, reminding me of how much He loves me.

It’s not about understanding my circumstances, but rather, knowing His love for me. “How Great the Love the Father has lavished upon us that we should be called the children of God” (1 John 3:1).

Joe often uses an example of when the kids were little. He would place them on a platform, like many Dad’s do, hold out his arms, and say,” Jump!” They didn’t question at all if he would miss them. They simply trusted him because they knew he loved them. He was their Daddy!

When Jessica was learning the “ABCs” of God she came home proudly from Sunday school, declaring in her high, sweet 5-year-old voice, “God is i-n-c-o-m-p-r-e-h-e-n-s-i-b-l-e! That means He is more than we can fully comprehend.” Then she recited the Scripture: “Who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been his counselor?” (Romans 11:34). After that little Bible lesson, incomprehensible became our new buzzword to trust God when situations arose in our lives that made no sense.

Incomprehensible!

To this day, I have found that it’s not about understanding everything. It’s about trusting His love for me that matters.

As I have walked, and often times trudged through the why questions of my grief journey, I’ve learned that if I cannot trust in God’s sovereignty then all I can conclude is that God is weak and something got by Him, or that He simply doesn’t care. However, I know that neither of those are true. God has proven His power and love to me over and over both experientially and through His Word. I can either allow doubt and unbelief to bury me in fear and self-pity, or live in the confidence of His love me. One robs me of sensing God’s presence, the other inviting me into it.

With ALL my Heart

After praying for me, a friend gave me Proverbs 3:5. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” As I meditated on it, I clearly saw that God never once directs us to understand Him with all our hearts. But rather, He instructs us to trust Him with all our heart, leaning not on our own understanding.

I am also told to love Him with all my heart. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength” (Deuteronomy 6:5). God created us in His image with hearts capable of loving Him. However, the enemy of our souls tries to distort and stifle this truth. He distorted this truth to Eve in the garden when he said, Are you sure God really said that? He tempts us to doubt the very character of God’s love and goodness to us.

Response-Ability

His ways are incomprehensible, and yet the Bible tells us we can know and comprehend what He chooses reveals to us.  We are told in Deuteronomy 29:29: The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.” I am so thankful He has revealed His love and goodness to us, which is what we can know, remember, and cling to.

I’ve heard it said that “It is not my ability, but my response to God’s ability, that counts.” So my response-ability to God is to trust His love and to love Him in return. We won’t ever know all the answers or have all the explanations for things that happen on this side of heaven, but through His revealed Word, we can know the character of His unfailing, unchanging, and unconditional love towards us. Understanding His ways are limited, but trusting His love is limitless! It’s so good, it’s incomprehensible!
